Lib Dem MP Victoria Collins and other Liberal Democrat frontbenchers met a cross-party delegation of US Congressmembers to discuss strategic and economic issues impacting the future of transatlantic cooperation, peace and security.

This meeting took place in Parliament, and involved Victoria as the Science, Innovation and Technology Spokesperson, alongside US Congressmembers from both the Democrat and Republican parties.

The meeting was confidential, but covered key topics including US-UK relations on economic growth, European security and defence, the climate emergency and harnessing the positive power of AI.

Discussions were collaborative, focussing on opportunities for joint work between legislators and the role of the Liberal Democrats in British politics.

These discussions were also an opportunity for Victoria and her Liberal Democrat colleagues to make clear their commitment to internationalism and international institutions, the rule of law, human rights and free trade, as some of the guiding principles for the Liberal Democrats' vision of future UK-US relations.

Victoria said:

“The growth of technology and increasing adoption of AI know no borders, and can be vital to harnessing growth across the globe. But they also bring serious risks that must be addressed.

“It was therefore deeply important to discuss these issues with cross-party politicians from the US - a country that is one of our key allies and will, and already is, playing a vital role in the use of such technology.

“It provided a chance to lay out our priorities, concerns and objectives in these areas, strengthening the groundwork for an important international relationship between the Liberal Democrats, and these key players in US politics.”
