Chancellor’s Spending Review a missed opportunity to fix the social care crisis

11 June 2025
Responding to the Spending Review today (Wednesday 11th June) Liberal Democrat Victoria Collins, MP for Harpenden & Berkhamsted, has criticised the government for yet again failing to give the social care crisis the urgency it requires.
Victoria is calling for the government to be more ambitious in tackling the crisis, particularly if they are to effectively relieve pressures on the NHS and reap any rewards of added investment announced today.
Following the Spending Review, Victoria said:
"Once again, the Government has failed to give the social care crisis the urgency it desperately requires. We can't fix the NHS without fixing social care, and the deafening silence on this crisis in the Chancellor's speech spoke volumes.
"Without ambitious action on social care, today's NHS investment will simply see more people backing up in A&E with nowhere to go. The Government must be far more ambitious if they want to relieve pressures on our health service and see any real return on today's spending announcements.
"Social care isn't a side issue, it's fundamental to making our health system work. The Government needs to stop treating it as an afterthought."
